Regardless of the container, the library needs to connect the author and the reader.   Find ways to share the ideas not the objects.

Doesn’t this seem like a parallel plight of libraries — “buying the same eBook content from multiple vendors” ?

Books as social animals

With such a fractured culture maybe the path forward for libraries is to get more specific and take more risks.  Libraries seem to have the social and the sharing part, maybe we need to be more specific on our audiences.  Perhaps, get big (consortia) and get specific.

Disruption

If the goal of libraries is to be the “connector” between author and reader then there is plenty of opportunity to try new things along the way.
